Creation process of Avalokiteshvara Gemstone Mandala at Tay Thien Grand Mandala Stupa.
The Avalokiteshvara sand mandala, measuring an un-precedented 9 meters on each side, is being drawn by 20 Drukpa monks over 9 intensive days at the Tay Thien Grand Mandala Stupa. Materials for this masterpiece of spiritual art include gemstones, ruby, quartz, lapis lazuli… only unprocessed natural stones are carefully selected, to invoke the full blessings. The stones are crushed to grain size then meticulously drawn by hand by qualified monks, who must practice deep meditation and visualization before the drawing process. Upon His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa’s blessing ceremony, the entire Mandala becomes a Pure Land, each grain of stone thus has become an atom of the pure realm, holding immeasurable enlightened energy. With sand mandala commonly measuring 1-2 meters, this is the largest project of its kind that the monks of Drukpa lineage have undertaken. Beside the striking artistic value, the public display of the Mandala will bring immense spiritual blessings for the nation and for those fortunate enough to view it.
